SEO has come a long way in the decade that it has been around for.

Today, there are various factors that need to be considered to ensure that your on-page SEO is on point.

Gaining search visibility has become extremely difficult even for some of the big shots in their niches.

What happens to the local and mid-sized businesses cannot be imagined.

So to help you and your business in your quest for on-page SEO, here’s a checklist that I’ve compiled, implementing the experience I’ve had in digital marketing.

1. Keyword Research

  • You must find the keywords that are trending related to your business niche and the topic that you are covering in the piece of content.
  • Here’s what you must do to find the perfect keywords:

a) Taking into consideration how often the keyword is searched for, and if the volume is big enough for your site to gain traffic, you will determine if it will work for you.

b) The keyword you are considering to use must be relevant to the theme of your page.

c) Your site must have enough authority to be able to rank amongst or above the sites that are already ranking for the keyword for your choice.

  • You may also analyze the keywords that are driving traffic to your website as of now as well and use it to your advantage.

2. A Primary Keyword

  • One page of your content should highlight one keyword. This keyword will generate the traffic you need for that page.
  • After this, you create a list of keywords that you will be needing for all your pages, after carrying out proper research.

3. SERP Research

  • You don’t want your efforts to go to waste, especially when the Google algorithm keeps changing as you optimize your pages.
  • You want to carry a full-fledged SERP research by looking at the results of the keyword of your choice, to see what Google considers as being the most relevant pages.
  • Now you examine these websites and see where you are going wrong and what you can do to fill those gaps in.
  • In the end, you create content that has a higher chance of ranking on Google due to the efforts you’ve put into it.

4. Working on the URLs

  • It is a must for websites to have well-formatted, easy to read, and clear URLs for the convenience of the visitors.
  • Adding a keyword to your URL can increase the possibilities of it ranking higher in the search results.
  • Always remember that the lesser the characters in a URL, the higher it will rank when it comes to Google.
  • The same concept also applies to the subfolders that you use to create your URL.

5. H2 Tags

  • Search engines crawlers are known to look for subheadings in the content that they wish to rank.
  • According to them, these headings are the main points of your content and will give out the information a viewer is looking for.
  • Simply put, the content becomes user-friendly and act as a direction giver to the ones scanning through the page.
  • While adding H2 tags, you must remember that not all of them require adding the keyword in them, and neither does it need to be a part of the H2 content.

6. LSI Keywords

  • As I mentioned before, there should be a primary keyword, the dominant one in all your content.
  • Except for this one keyword, you must also research and look for 3 to 5 LSI keywords that can support your primary keyword and help with page rankings.
  • There are various free tools available online to help you with the same, like Ubersuggest, Alexa Competitor Keyword Matrix, and Google Related Searches.

7. Adding Internal Links

  • You must already know about backlinks and internal links, right? For any off-page SEO activities, backlinks are a must, while the internal links are required for the on-page SEO activities.
  • To create a plan of action, you must start by dividing your procedure into various levels:

a) Each post should include internal links so as to link all similar content together.

b) The subcategories and the categories you create in your content should be linked to its relational content on each page.

c) Create a sitemap with categories linked to the various pages on your website to ensure that crawlers do not get lost.

  • Adding links should feel natural, rather than forced into the content for SEO.

8. Meta Description

  • Those snippets that you see describing a page’s content when you look up information on Google are the meta description, a crucial part of SEO.
  • Viewers can get a summary of the content that they will see if they were to click on a link.
  • The higher the impact of a meta tag, the higher the click-through rate.

9. Meta Titles

  • Taking care of the meta description is not enough. You must also find an appropriate meta title.
  • For a search engine to easily find your page, you must ensure that the meta title matches the content of your page.
  • A meta title that has less than 60 characters and includes a keyword, works the best.

10. Adding Images and Videos

  • Approximately 65% of the world’s population are visual learners, which makes adding images into the content important.
  • Readers would be interested in gaining information through images rather than reading lengthy content.
  • The chances of visual content being shared are also higher than that of the regular content.

11. Long and Relevant Content

  • The type of content that you put up on your site will determine how well it can do when it reaches the public eye.
  • For onsite SEO, long-form content, with 1500 to 2000 words, ensures that your page performs better.
  • With long and relevant content you can welcome more backlinks and increase your page authority.

12. Alt Tags and Descriptions

  • The images in your content should be titled, have a proper description, and a keyword so that crawlers are able to relate it to the keyword searched by a user.
  • The alt tag must be such that a viewer can form an image in their head by reading the description you have provided, in case the image doesn’t load.

13. Schema Markup

  • To enable search engines to conveniently find your page content, your HTML must have a set of microdata, which helps in the SERPs.
  • All of this is well-structured data making your page easy to be understood around the world.
  • You’re able to gain higher click-through rates, which is better for your business.

14. Mobile-First

  • Search engine optimization can work only when your site has been optimized for mobile phones.
  • It has been observed that Google uses the mobile version of websites to rank them, which means it considers mobile-first indexing.
  • If your website appears distorted or is not user-friendly for mobile users, then there’s a lesser chance for a higher rank.

15. Reviews

  • The reviews posted on your website let viewers know that you can be trusted for the products or services you offer.
  • Along with this, your site will start ranking higher with better reviews that are found by crawlers.
  • In the case of bad reviews, ensure that you provide satisfactory answers to turn it around and help with your SEO.

16. FAQs and Answering Queries

  • Websites that provide the exact information that a viewer is looking for, tend to rank higher on the SERP.
  • In posts, adding FAQs largely benefit how the crawlers view your site and work as a great content strategy.
  • With a highly clear and specific answer, the chances of your page ranking higher increases.

17. Content Quality

  • For users to stick around on your page or even Google to rank you higher, your content must be foolproof.
  • Quality content that provides substantial information has a higher chance of showing up in SERP.
  • Content with little or no value is called “thin content” and must be removed.

18. Fix Broken Links

  • You may have added external links into your content in the past, but they may not be working now or may have been removed.
  • These must be removed or changed for better user experience.
  • Not only that, broken links are one of the major causes of websites ranking low on SERPs.

19. Build Up Pages

  • You want to show credibility through the pages on your website.
  • Adding details about various aspects of your business, like about us, why pick us, etc. and about the employees that are a part of your business, like the content team, their author bios, etc. can help in building trust amongst the viewers.
  • This trust and credibility can help with the SERPs.

20. Calculate the Loading Time

  • If a website takes any more than a couple of seconds to load, the user will leave the website.
  • The faster your site loads, the lesser will be your bounce rate.
  • With a lower bounce rate registered with Google, you can go higher on the SERP.
